In the meantime, we wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU to Coleridge school children who did a great job decorating halls for Swab. Save a Life event with hand made and decorated bows, harts and angels shapes. All were displayed on big hula-hoops for everyone to see and here are the pictures of some of their work. Well Done!
A week in and it is time to take stock and reflect on the events of the last 10 days.
When we set off on this journey we planned for Swab. Save a Life event on Saturday 17th January to be a culmination of the blood cancer Awareness Week. If only we knew that it will be the beginning of something far bigger. The event resulted in over 300 new registrations, but this number quickly exceeded 400 in the following days. All of these people are now local ‘messengers’ talking to their friends, families, mums at school gates, colleagues at work, etc about stem cell donation and about how easy it is to be in with the chance to save someone’s life. This supportive blog entry written by Sara Jones, one of the local mums who came and registered on the 17th Jan really shows the scale of the impact the day had http://www.dewgibbons.com/blog/swab.-save-a-life. Combined with the coverage of the event on BBC London News and ITV London News we’ve been inundated with requests for another event or an opportunity to register from residence and businesses, as well as to hold assemblies across more schools.
It is absolutely fabulous and humbling to see such sense of community spirit in London. What started as an Awareness Week, quickly evolved into an Awareness Month and looks like it is likely to turn into an ongoing Awareness Drive across Crouch End, Muswell Hill, Hampstead, Highgate and Stroud Green thanks to our wonderful volunteers and all those who registered.
We will be running a few registration stations over the next couple of months to give an opportunity to register to all those who missed the event on Saturday, so watch this space for new dates.
Together we have now increased the number of registrations in Crouch End by nearly 400% and who knows where this number will be by summer.
Every single registration counts !
